JHL President Päivi Niemi-Laine announced her resignation from her post in the meeting of the union’s Executive Committee on Thursday 23 November. The Executive Committee granted the resignation. Niemi-Laine becomes the union’s director of public affairs with immediate effect.
– JHL and its members are very important and dear to me. I’ve been working as union president with all my heart since 2016. SAK’s management and I have profoundly differing views on principles. In my opinion, it was no longer possible to promote the pay development of those with low pay. I’m glad to continue to serve JHL in a post that allows me to make a difference to public services, Päivi Niemi-Laine says.
– I want to give JHL and SAK peace to work. I hope that the whole trade union movement will have the strength, willingness and unity to address matters collectively. I don’t want to tear apart, I want to reach agreements and build.
– I will continue to use all my competence for the benefit of JHL.
The director of public affairs works directly under the union president. The post involves influencing public affairs, and managing other influencing duties, in a comprehensive manner.
In accordance with JHL’s rules, the Union Council selects the president. The current Chief Executive Officer, Interim President Håkan Ekström will perform the president’s tasks until the Union Council has assembled to address the matter.
– JHL goal is still to be at all negotiation tables where our members’ terms and conditions of employment are processed. We will continue our intense discussions with SAK, Interim President Håkan Ekström states.
